The "washout plant" was a plant to provide hot boiler wash water. Most roundhouses had some variation of them for monthly boiler washes. You didn't want to use cold water for boiler washes because it stressed the boiler. From: archie <klinerarch@charter.net> To: CBQ@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2012 2:56 PM Subject: [CBQ] CB&Q roundhouse at Hannibal List, I have found a large number of blueprint drawings of various structures here at Hannibal. Subjects include additions of stalls 1,2,3, and 4 in 1925. Remodeling of the General office building in 1951. Also an 1899 layout of H&StJo facilities. New BR depot in 1953-54. Also new CTC addition that was built in 1951 on the north side of the general office building. One blueprint that was strange to me was called a Washout plant built in 1928. It appeared to be a two story building with a large tank on both sides It was added to existing roundhouse on the northwest side of the RH. Any idea what this was ? It was gone by the late 50s.
