Archie...This would be the place where the chemicals were mixed and water heated for "washing out" boilers on steam locomotives. This was a procedure that was done periodically....the period depending upon the "hardness" and chemical content of the water supply used by the engines.
It was a dirty and somewhat dangerous job, but had to be done to keep the boilers free of the "mud"..(accumulated "solids" )which gathered in the locomtive boilers. It would accumulate in the lower reaches of the boiler around what was called...are you ready for it.........the MUD RING.
Pete

Subjects include additions of stalls 1,2,3, and 4 in 1925. Remodeling of the General office building in 1951. Also an 1899 layout of H&StJo facilities. New BR depot in 1953-54. Also new CTC addition that was built in 1951 on the north side of the general office building. One blueprint that was strange to me was called a Washout plant built in 1928. It appeared to be a two story building with a large tank on both sides It was added to existing roundhouse on the northwest side of the RH. Any idea what this was ? It was gone by the late 50s.
