Before CTC the automatic block system was used BUT it was a check block system was used this is covered by rules 315-329 and can not be found in the later Consolidated Code of '67  An operator would under the direction of the train dispatcher call the next operator down the line and check with him if it was OK to allow a train into the block and the second operator would set his boards to stop and then tell the first operator to allow them to run the train into the block even against the current of normal operation as the signal system was bi-directional.  Given this flexibility was the reason more traffic could be moved but you had to have manned stations.

Jim,

As of March, 2012, the old signal bridges at Downers Grove were still serving the RR. BTW, there was also an interlocking tower at Somonauk, IL , just west of Sandwich. At one time, it was manned by L. E. griffith who often brought his camera to work and was responsible for a number of published Q photos it that area.

Hello all,

I have a related question to this topic. If CTC was installed in the 60's, when did the Q erect the signal bridges in the area? If they were built earlier than the CTC system, what signals were used(three light or target)?

For those members not in the midwest, these signal bridges are going fast. BNSF installed new signals over the past couple of years and took the target signals out of service. I've watched a couple of the bridges being scraped at Kewanee and east. I think the only bridges left are in the Galesburg area. Their days are numbered with new track and signal work in progress at Galesburg.
