Before CTC the automatic block system was used BUT it was a check block system was used this is covered by rules 315-329 and can not be found in the later Consolidated Code of '67 An operator would under the direction of the train dispatcher call the next operator down the line and check with him if it was OK to allow a train into the block and the second operator would set his boards to stop and then tell the first operator to allow them to run the train into the block even against the current of normal operation as the signal system was bi-directional. Given this flexibility was the reason more traffic could be moved but you had to have manned stations. BTW, there was also an interlocking tower at Somonauk, IL , just west of Sandwich. At one time, it was manned by L. E. griffith who often brought his camera to work and was responsible for a number of published Q photos it that area.
