In light of the recent conversations regarding the KC Cutoff, Forker, Carrolton Branch etc I thought the recently discovered piece in the "Light of the Lantern" section of RAILROAD Magazine August 1949 might be of some interest to the younger generation..You old guys will remember RAILROAD....The Light of the Lantern Section was composed of questions sent in by readers and answered by various members of RAILROAD's staff....(There may have been as many as 3 full time employees)
Here tis...Q. What's the story on the Burlington's proposed shortcut into Kansas City?
A. If the CB&Q has its way, a new railroad---the Kansas City & Brookfield--will become a reality in the near future, just as soon as articles of incorporation for its establlishment are approved by the court at Jefferson City, Mo. The KC&B will provide Buringotn with a necessary shortcut into Kansas City. Terminal points wll be a junction with the Wabash about two miles east of Missouir City in Clay County, and a junction with the Burlington's Carrollton Brnch near Tina, in Carroll County.
The proposed 45 mile road will slice 23 miles of the Q's Chicago-Kansas City mainlilne. Thke Burlington plans to use Wabash tracks for 12 1/2 miles between Birmingham and Missouri City Juntion and the new railroad for 45 1/2 miles between Missouri City Junction and Tina Junction. At Tina Junction CB&Q trains will travel the Carrollton Branch for 21 1/2 miles to Forker. The new seven-mile cutoff is to be built by the WAY OF TH ZEPHYRS between the latter town and a point just west of Brookfield. The resulting 86 mile route will be practically straight, and will greatly reduce the present running time via Cameron Junction.
Pete
