Dave,

You mention photos by Hol Wagner on page 122 – in what book?

Thanks,

Scott Myers

NKP Car Co is doing 4 Pullman Sleeper "Clover Series" sub-plans - 4036A,B,C, and F/I.

Nine "Clover Series" Pullman Sleepers could be found in Exposition Flyer Service: "Clover Camp", "Clover Colors", "Clover Downs", "Clover Plant", "Clover Plot", "Clover Town", "Clover Villa", "Clover Veldt" and "Clover Basin". But only seven of these were regularly scheduled. Two cars, "Clover Veldt" and "Clover Basin" had ice air conditioning and were used in emergencies and as through cars to NYC post 1948. On Dec. 31, 1948 the CB&Q took ownership of four "Clover Series" cars: "Clover Camp", "Clover Colors", "Clover Veldt" and "Clover Basin" and leased them back to Pullman to staff.

"Clover Series" Pullman Sleepers were designated as 8-5 sleepers (8 open sections and 5 double bedrooms) re-built by Pullman on plan 4036F in 1940. There are two nice photos of "Clover Veldt" taken in 1962 at Denver by Hol Wagner on page 122 and another in Bill Glick's Burlington Passenger Car Photo Album Book. These two photos show both sides of "Clover Veldt." Other "Clover" series cars run on the CB&Q included "Clover Damp" and "Clover Colors" which were also built on Plan 4036F and "Clover Basin" which was built on Plan 4036E. One can find some nice line drawings for these same CB&Q 8-5 sleepers in Bill Glick's Passenger Cars of the Burlington 1869 to the 1930's on page 43. A nice clear photo of the one remaining Clover Series Sleeper, now preserved at the Western Railway Museum, "Clover Plot" can be located in Jim Eager's book Western Pacific Color Guide to Freight & Passenger Equipment on p. 14.

Plans A,B,and C have the sections at the vestibule end and the bedrooms at the blind end. They have the "Gothic" style of rivet patterns, and most of them have a round-top vestibule end. A vs B have different a/c ducts and underbody equipment locations. The sides of the A and B are the same. The C sides differs from A and B in aisle window pattern only.

The F/I have the sections in the middle of the car with bedrooms on either side. That makes the roof ducting quite different. These cars have the updated 1930's rivet patterns, with most of them having the round-top vestibule end.
A,B, and C were used by Pullman and a number of roads - PRR, ACL, SAL, NYC, SP, CRI&P, Wab, IC, Frisco, MKT, and B&O (but with a betterment arch roof). . Plans F/I were used by the CB&Q, MP, WP, SRR, L&N, SP..

Kits include etched-brass sides with separate window sashes and doors, correct resin roof (masters made from BLT roofs), all the Branchline Trains detail parts and trucks (incl Intermountain 36" wheel sets) and necessary instructions.

Regular price is $77. Firm orders received by June 1st (check or credit card) will be priced at $70, plus $6 s&h up to three kits. If you have a particular car name in mind, NKP Car Co can "customize" the kit with the appropriate roof, end, etc. The special round-top end is an additional $6.

NKP Car Co expects to ship in June/July. Sides are in stock, roofs are being cast, and all the other BLT parts are in inventory at NPK Car Co.
If you have further questions, please contact NKP Car Co at bnsf739@aol.com.
