 Sorry to hear this. I was taken for $300 by a firm in Mo. That  took my money while in the process of going out of business. I contacted the Attorney Generals office who did a investigation and informed me I wasn't the only person in line for money. They suggested I contact a lawyer to file a small claims case in Missouri against this firm. After doing so I was informed by the attorney that it would cost about $300 or more to persue a small claims case against this firm. Not worth it. So I lost out of the $300. It is really hard to determine the validity of dealing with anyone. This firm had been in business for over 50 years. I assumed it was safe to deal with. Sorry to hear this John. Good news is your legal options may be simpler than you think. Some small claims courts will hear cases involving out-of-state defendants when it can be determined that the business/individual breached a contract negotiated or performed in your state. Since contracts negotiated via email can be viewed in some states as business conducted within the prosecutor's state of residence, many small claims courts will hear such cases, the papers being filed by mail via secretary of state. Check with your local district court. Though it is often not financially viable to collect on small claims such as this, you may find obtaining a judgment worth the relatively small time/money it takes.

At the very least, you can file a complaint with the FTC:
