Steve:
By 1960 the ICC had become very selective in which accidents it investigated, and this one on the FW&D at Memphis, Tex., in October 1960 was not significant enough to warrant ICC attention. But the fact that it was a rear-end collision, with a passenger train trunning into a stopped freight, would indicate that someone didn't obey orders and signals might have made a difference.

Was the lack of signalling on the FW&D contributory to the wreck that destroyed E5A 9980A, the Silver Chief?

While the CB&Q did indeed use lower quadrant semaphores, the FW&D until well after its mergerin BN was almost entirely dark -- unsignaled -- territory, as was the C&S. The only semaphores used by the Denver were train order signals on depots , and they were indeed lower quadrant. See the attached images. Hol Wagner

I am modeling a branch on the old FW&D. I am going on my memory here, and of course being older, it is not what it used to be. I can't remember the color of the boards on the old signals. I think they were red board, but I can't remember for sure. Does anyone have an old rule book or are there already scans of the old signals?
