Not just freight cars. In 1971 I was on a station platform in Germany waiting for a train. After standing for a while I turned around and there was a pacific (4-6-2) steam engine, I never heard it come in it was so quiet.

That incident has stayed with me to this day !  It PROVED to me that rolling freight cars can be both totally silent AND deadly should one's attention be momentarilly directed away from the task at hand.  Awareness of your surroundings is paramount to survival both as an employee as well as a "casual" observer !!
