Interestingly, mountain RR building is, in many instances, easier than building a "flat" RR on the praries. Nature has provided huge piles of rock and dirt on which to carve grades and lay out easy curves. Some roads were more fortunate than others in this endeavor. Bridges and tunnels resulted in many miles of straight RR. Prarie RR'ing. often demanded "borrowing" enormous quantities of soil from the surrounding vastness of the area. Often times there WAS no practical way to reduce or eliminate heavy grades. Curves were often used to ameliorate the grade problem. The "flat, endless prarie" WAS endless, however, it was NOT flat. The Q demonstrated sound business principals by building it and turning it into a profitable enterprise FIRST !! When the money allowed, they turned to "beautifying" the property, ie: grade and curve reduction projects. Strangely, the part of the Q most important to Hill's transcontinental dreams was pretty flat and straight right outta the box. Karl ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
