Hello Glen and All -
Your explanation seems plausible. Flag stops were an intriguing device and
instructions for passengers were printed in public timetables ("Wave the flag",
wave your handkerchief, wave your arms, whatever...) So that may well be the
'flag' on the Bayview sign. By the way, RR rules say a 'station' is a place
with a name. No building of any type is reqired. So Bayview is a station. The
milepost locations are from Burlington - the old Guides show Quincy at 72.
There is a Homan Creek north of Quincy that flows into the upper end of Quincy
Bay. Bayview itself would be only a couple miles north of the yard. PAW

At the BRHS meet, Phil Weibler showed a photograph of a board beside the
track, and asked if anyone knew what it was. I think it may have been a station
flag. Old employee timetables show that the two locals between Burlington and
Quincy would stop on flag at stations, for example Carthage Lake, Homan, and
Bay View. And station flags are identified on old CB&Q R/W maps, at two
locations just north of Quincy, at Homan at MP 66.93 and Bay View at MP 68.25.
These locations were likely un-manned, so it was probably up to the passenger
to set the station flag to stop the train.

  Glen Haug
