And don't forget, that was on jointed rail. I remember Mr. Flynn, the C&I
roadmaster riding 21 & 22 two or three times a week. He'd sit in the last car
with his notebook making notations like 44 rail lengths west of MP 67. I
wonder how many miles he accumulated walking the C&I.

The FASTEST I've EVER gone on a steel-wheeled vehicle was on 21. We were
commin'off Stratford at 90+ plus. As we headed down toward the IC overhead
bridge I noticed that the "trusty" Engineer had not shut the throttle down, as
was the custom, but, instead, hollered, "hey kid - - come-ere and lookit THIS"
"THIS" referred to the two electric speed indicators mounted on the non-speed
recorder equipped E5's. BOTH needles were bouncin' off the "peg", the "peg"
bein' the one BEYOND the 100 mark. TWO miles a minuet !!!! I'm sure the depot
at Polo lost half the shingles off the roof as we passed by.
They're currently "studyin" high speed, intercity rail service in DC. I think
they need ta look BACKWARD in time !!!!
