The late 1940s-early '50s were a real watershed period for commuter service on
many US railroads, the Q included. Not only were streamlined, double-deck cars
introduced, but the older cars were rebuilt, repainted and relettered. The
earlier suburban coaches had been open platform and painted Pullman green with
black roofs and Roman lettering. Right around the time the double deck cars
were ordered, the older cars were rebuilt, got vestibules and were repainted in
a new, green and tan scheme, with a yellow stripe around the windows, and
silver roofs. And they were relettered in the newer, ribbon style.

So it really depends on exactly when during this transitional period you want
to model, because everything changed real quickly. If you want to model the
later period, it's a lot easier. NKP offers accurate kits for the rebuilt
coaches. And you always can throw in a standard heavyweight coach or chair car
(from Aurora Shops, if you can find 'em, or stand-ins from Branchline). For the
earlier period, you're on your own. Whether the NKP kits might be backdated is
an open (platform) question. Maybe Ray and/or Bill down in San Jose, or Ken in
Sacramento, have thought about this. There certainly are lots of photos showing
these cars and their colors in the various available color guides and BRHS
bulletins.

Good luck and happy modeling,
Jonathan
