John to travel from Chariton to Marshalltown in 1912, the most direct route would be to take the CB&Q east to Albia. At Albia switch to the Minneapolis & St Louis, this would require a walk or depot hack ride to the Joint Wabash/M&STL depot) on the SE side of town as I am not sure if there was a passenger connection at Maxon where the lines crossed on the east side of Albia. The M&StL would take them to Marshalltown. At Marshalltown a Chicago & North Western train would take them to Boone. The M&StL and C&NW share the same depot in Marshalltown so connections would be easy. An alternate route would be take the Rock Island from Chariton to Des Moines, then the Chicago Great Western to Marshalltown. You would need to transfer between depots at Des Moines. Or a remote possibility would be to take the CB&Q from Chariton to Indianola. The RI from Indianola to Des Moines (depots were across the street from each other in Indianola).
