Good points Leo. The Q called their landfill, the Herrin Junction Gob Track. 
And lets don't forget the the Galesburg Tie Plant and the Aurora Concrete Plant 
(pre fabricated pilings, bridge decks, signs, fence posts and much more). The Q 
also had its own brass foundry and testing laboratory. At one time the Q even 
operated their own steamboat.

And of a few more bullet points on how self contained the RRs were:

-they owned gravel pits for fill and ballast
-they owned coal operations for fuel
-they operated their own landfills(of course they weren't called that)
-they had their own internal courts and systems of justice(called 
investigations)
-they recycled their own equipment

I believe an upcoming Zephyr has an article on the last point
