Norm,
I moved to DG Berwyn as child in 1946. I spent a lot of time along
the Q in that area in my much younger years. During my life, there
was never a bridge at the Williams Street location. The only
crossings were Cass to the east and Fairview Ave. to the west. My
late father was born in DG and was a Q fan from about the age of 5. I
never heard him mention a bridge or any other kind of crossing there.
Possibly there was some thought of building one there at one time,
but as you note, it would have had to have been a bridge similar to
that at Oak Street in Hinsdale.
As for the petroleum facility, I don't think the Q ever switched it.
The only thing that they switched in that area was Pepperidge Farm
Bakery and that switch was cut in until the very early 1950s when the
plant was built.
BTW, the satellite view on the new Mapquest shows Williams St. ending
at Quincy St., several hundred feet from the tracks with private or
commercial property between Quincy St. and the tracks. Williams St.
on the north side comes closer to the tracks ending at W. Burlington
Ave.
