I recall a memo in the late 70's from either GM @ Janesville, WI or Chrysler @
Belvidere, IL, suggesting to the RR's that they would lock all vehicles after
driving them aboard autoracks, place all keys in trunk of one car at the end of
"cut" with key of that trunk going to the Conductor in a "Company Mail' env to
be given to consignee.
I recall a similar incident to what Steve vividly described happening to a car
coming to BN's bulk auto unloading yard in Naperville. Obviously the person(s)
turning on a dome light in a car at night made themselves an easy target for
vigilant RR employees! Some of you may recall a Ford TV commercial years ago
showing two 'knights of the road' sitting in the front seat of a convertible
discussing all the reasons why they preferred Fords; then the camera
(apparently mounted on a helicopter) pulls away revealing the 2 are atop an
auto transport speeding down a highway! Hilarious!
The open topped 2 level racks lasted longer than the 3 level as odd sized truck
chassis would sometimes not fit the roofed, enclosed version. I know Winnebago
still got some truck chassis in Forest City (ex-RI branch nee C&NW nee UP) into
the late 90's and maybe very early 00's.
One of the Burlington's classic company PR photos is of Studebaker Larks on
auto transports carried on 86' flats.

One nite working at Aurora Tower a westbound freight was going thru as I made
the usual inspection. Auto racks use to be open and on the top deck of one was
a guy reading a newspaper by the dome lite of a new car. Wonder how long the
battery held out??

There was a "camp" at Savanna,IL. It was at the west end of the Q yard on
the North side and just east of the Milw xing. Bob "Gabby" Watson pointed
it out to me one summer night after we caught the w/c on an eastbounder at
the west end. The campfire was glowing brightly. After looking at the notes
in Bud Lintroths latest edition of the "Peavine" history, I have to wonder
if it wasn't on the old C.B.& N. R-O-W.
This would have been sometime in the early to mid 70's.

Ps-The "Bo's" were also common in Cicero. One night I had the "xxxx"
scared out of me by one as he came up behind me while I was walking our train
in
depature yard. He just wanted to know which train went to Galesburg.
On another occasion we pulled one off a CH east of Savanna in far below
zero temps and let him ride in the W/C to Cicero.
