You're right! According to an Answer in Zephyr #28 "The first use of "Omaha" orange paint on maintenance-of-way equipment was in 1948. One source has told the ZEPHYR that the re-painting of the Lines East rail gang, which was about fifty cars, took place in the summer of 1948. The entire outfit was painted orange at Clyde Yard in Cicero, Il."
