Some good points there Charlie as to what extent Q/GN/NP cooperated on matters
of various kinds.
My long time dream is that we & the NP & GN Societies hold a joint meeting in a
city common to all 3 RR's (a good location as is midway to west coast & Chicago
would be Billings, MT). As I understand both GN & NP alternate society
meetings from their E to W ends. Billings would also be attractive to C&S fans
& not terribly far for SP&S.
We have SO much to share plus most Q fans have some GN/NP items they would like
to sell/swap & vice-a-versa - this way we could keep Hill Road items "in the
family".
Apparently there were a lot of shared mechanical items as rosters of
officers/committee mbrs of various RR associations such as the Master
Mechanics, etc show Q/GN/NP people serving together. Also all 3 roads shared
Passenger & Frt offices in many metro areas, trains were shared (the obvious
EPB & W. Star & NCL & Mainstreeter AS well as thru frts & car blocking),
brochures & postcards issued jointly, etc etc. There were also joint tariffs,
etc. Although each was independent, they all profited when traffic could be
taken from the Milw, RI/SP, UP/C&NW, etc by routing GN/Q or GN/NP. There were
also shared items such as the special BROS snowplow, trying "pendulum" cars
(CB&Q & GN being 2 of the 3 RR's that did so), etc etc.
It's time we reach out to our fellow BN predecessor fans & modelers to share at
one big super meet! THAT would bring out a crowd & super clinics & get a lot
of generic midwest/western RR enthusiasts.

Gerald-
I've always understood that the CB&Q flats (class at the moment not in my
memory, but the straight sill jobs that were used under the B29 housings,
for example) were built by the CB&Q to NP drawings.
Also heard that Havelock built some NP "economy" baggage car "kits" for the
NP and that the CB&Q cars were inspired by them.
The commonality of design between NP, CB&Q and GN equipment is a great
research project for somebody.... the Q T1 2-6-6-2s that were diverted from
the GN and had similar machines on the NP, tender designs (both roll-top and
coal pusher).... even some of the GN and NP steam looks very CB&Q-ish if you
take off the cab, headlight and other GN or NP fixtures.....
