It would seem to me that the leases occurred due to some sort of
customer demand, possibly short term. If the leases occurred at
different times, maybe the leasing RR did not have the required cars
at the time. Since the cars were in different groups, it could be
that one might have had special features that the other did not. Flat
cars in that time frame were pretty generic and most cars of any
description were "free runners", roaming the entire country on all or
any of the 30 plus Class I RRs of the day. There were very few cars
in dedicated pools as one finds today. Often, a RR might not see some
of it's own cars for long periods of time. Some short lines had more
cars than they had track. RRs regularly leased cars from financial
companies, but I would think that the practice of leasing from one RR
to another was rather unusual unless there was a special customer
need for a certain type of car to be held in dedicated service.
Depending on the capacity, those 1942 built cars were probably
originally used to haul military equipment.
