Darren:

When the lunar was on, the main target was always red. The name of this aspect
was "Permissive", and the indication was "Proceed at Restricted Speed through
entire block". This type of lunar target was only installed on absolute
signals (at control points). Intermediate signals on the Burlington (those
with a number plate) displaying red were already "Permissive", so they did not
need the lunar.

Since the signal at the control point governed not only the control point, but
the intermediate block to the next signal, the signal would stay red until both
the control point and the intermediate block was unoccupied. This was a
disadvantage, particularly in the suburban territory, with closely spaced
trains. Although you could be "talked by" the signal by the dispatcher, you
had to stop first. The addition of the lunar (when ON) was a way to indicate
that the control point was correctly lined up and NOT occupied, even though the
intermediate block WAS occupied. It prevented the stop.

Hello,

In regards to the lunar signals...

When the lunar aspect was displayed, was the main target red or off?

When the main target displayed yellow or green was the lunar target off?

Thank you,

Subject: [CBQ] CB&Q Signal Heads (Searchlight Signals and Lunar Targets)

Hi All,

I'm looking for information on CB&Q signal heads, specifically
searchlight signals and the lunar targets used on the system, primarily
on the Eastern Lines.

Would anyone have any drawings and or photographs of the searchlight
signals heads and lunar targets, showing what they looked like, front
and back, how the lunar target was attached to the signal mast, the
dimensions of both searchlight heads and lunar targets, etc....

Anything that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

James Koretsky
