>From the suburban job postings used at each "time change" in the BRT/UTU
Aurora lodge files mixed consists of the old green coaches and bilevels were
routine until all the old green coaches were retired.
The green coaches were referred to as "flat tops" or green and the
bilevels as DD in these postings and typical consists were, from the west
end, power car,'X' # of DDs and "y" # of flat tops. And in the 50s any
mail,express
or baggage cars. These sheets were prepared by the trainmasters clerk at
Aurora for train crew bidding purposes. Look at the Hill yard photo from 1964
on pg44 in Mike Spoors Vol 1 for confirmation.
It would be my experienced opinion that the power car was kept on the west
end so passengers wouldn't have to walk past its fumes and noise in CUS.
Also that the power car and DDs were on the west end for easier switching at
both Aurora and 14th st.
Rich, please excuse one minor correction to your otherwise well stated
comments. The train crews didn't flip seats. There were carmen helpers at
Aurora and CUS for that duty and a quick lite cleaning well into the late
70s/early 80s. Those jobs are now gone and I do see train crews flipping seats
at Aurora and CUS along with picking up newspapers, etc.
