Thought I'd throw out a few dimensions based on measurements taken from
photographs. If the standard height for a heavyweight car wall is 90 inches
(which seems to be the case from my models), the 3530 series of branchline
combines seems to have a letterboard 20.6 inches deep (scaling out at .237
inches in HO). The window section and the section below the windows both seem
to be around 34.7 inches or .398 inches in HO. Charlie is certainly right that
the Branchline cars don't have a letterboard nearly this depth. Anyone have an
Athearn car they could measure? The other option I'm toying with is to do the
whole side from scratch using the rivet decals from Archer and maybe their
raised panel edge for the drip strip.

  Duncan-

The Branchline and Walthers coaches are steel cars built as such. They don't
have the deeper letterboard of a steel sheathed car.
The 3537, while not pictured in Bill Glick's photo book, is part of the
3530-38 series which were rebuilt from Class PB-13, PB-13A, and PB14, all built
in 1903-4 as 4400-4439 wood bodied steel underframed coaches by ACF. The cars
were steel plated as coaches by Pullman in 1924. The PB13A 5939 was rebuilt in
3/15/49 to the 3537.

The exact genealogy of the 5939 is not clear; the records do not show the
original number of the car. Some of the cars in the 3530-38 appear to have gone
directly from the original numbers and some through 59XX before going to the
35XX. I don't know if the renumbering sequence involves if the cars were steel
sheathed or not but the records show the cars done at Pullman in 1924 were the
4431, 4433, 4437, and 4439. I've got a Pullman builders photo of the 4431

I still think you are better off starting with Athearn Pullmans for the
windows ends and windows and letterboard proportions are better for this
project than the Walthers or Branchline cars. The Athearn Baggage will give you
the doors and blank side material. Use the Walthers and Branchline car better
parts for
the underframe and other details, but the Athearn stuff, although more
difficult to chop up, will get you
  closer to the 3537.
