If you perceived the difficulties in getting two engines to co-ordinate their movements on a train consider the line in New Zealand just north of Wellington where the gradient was between 1 in 14 and 1 in 16 and up to five Fell engines were used, spread through the train on the upward journey and all of them at the front on the way down. And this was long before radios! The Fell system utilised two additional raised rails in the centre of the track, and the engines were equipped with horizontal wheels underneath that clasped the centre rails to provide additional traction. Both the engines and the special brake vans (waycars) (one per engine) had additional brakes that gripped the centre rails. An engine and a brake van have been preserved in a museum at Featherstone.
