Leo, What about Oscar Meyers? When I worked the Galesburg to Clinton job the
old heads would point out the plant just after you crossed the river into Iowa.
What really sticks in my mind is the huge number of rats the industry
generated. A favorite trick the old heads would pull was not telling the new
guy what to expect when he ran to throw the switch just west of the bridge.
The rats would swarm over the tracks as you ran towards the switch, some
bouncing off your legs as they were swarming. I swear some were as big as
cats. and there were literally thousands. They must have loved wieners and
bologna. When you climbed back on the motor the head end guys were cracking
up. Needless to say, the next time I ran for the switch, my pants cuffs were
tied up tight and I ran faster. Although we didn't do much short work in the
Quad Cities, I remember the many industries that were pointed out to me.
Besides John Deere there were several other farm implement factories and I do
seem to recall setting out cars on the Dri Line interchange track. Archie

I don't know for sure as this predates me(I know, hard to believe) but most
likely the answer is coal. The Q moved massive quantities of coal from So ILL.
