The Center Siding at Monmouth was often used for westbound pickups on trains
that bypassed Galesburg Yard
One nite working the C&I job which use to handle all the trains from Aurora to
St. Croix. I had a train burn off a journal and it dropped between the
switches of a center siding. I only put out one order. The Main Line between
siding switches out of service center siding ????(can't remember now) will be
used as the Westbound Main. The train crew(5 man crew) using flags ran around
train and pulled the rear back so they could go thru the center siding and left
it line that way.
That was when we had train crews who knew how to operate and were willing to
work

Like too save money on the center sidings.
Another was at Monmouth IL and others.
UP used a lot from the Nebraska all the way
to Ogden.

Many of their decisions there were to save money.
Like the 1965 flood and the Plum River usage.
