Mark,
Do you have the Burlington Bulletin No. 7? It is on the history of the XM-32
class car from original build to BN.
There are photos that confirm your observation and one on page 22 that shows a
FW&D BN car with both stiles and rungs of the end ladder rising to the 5th rib.
5 panel Superior door.
On some of the later rebuilt cars there was a horizontal grab that went the
width of the end above the fourth rib from the bottom. see also page 10.
Of course there were a lot of cars that made it into BN that weren't modified
in any way. Until the dreaded renumbering.

Subject: [CBQ] Cut down ladders on XM-32 boxcars
Happy New Year everyone!
I have a question concerning the cut down ladders on XM-32 boxcars
following removal of the running boards. On the A-end of some cars, it
appears that the ladder stiles are not cut down to the same length.
The left hand stile is usually cut down to approximately the seam
between the two end sheets. The right hand stile appears to be cut
down only to the fifth rib from the bottom. This appears to be very
common with the XM-32b cars. The photos that I'm working from are three-
quater views with much of the end obscured by shadows. Are the ladder
stiles really cut down to different lengths?
Thanks,
Mark Heiden
