Groundbreaking Ceremony Planned for South Dakota State Railroad Museum
Hill City, South Dakota - The public and media are invited to an official
groundbreaking
photo opportunity for the South Dakota State Railroad Museum, Ltd. in Hill
City, South
Dakota, on Friday, November 28 at 4PM. The event will be held at the south end
of the
Black Hills Central Railroad/1880 TRAIN depot. Museum board members and
representatives of the Black Hills Central Railroad will give brief remarks
preceding the
photo opportunity.
The organization of the Museum (a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation) was first
announced in 2004. Board members and individuals from across South Dakota have
encouraged the development of the facility in order to preserve the state's
unique railroad
history, and promote other historic rail sites.
The group's museum, research library, and headquarters will be located on the
grounds of
the venerable 1880 TRAIN/Black Hills Central Railroad. The focus of the
Museum's
activities and collections will be memorabilia, rolling stock, and items
related to the
dozens of railroad companies that have served South Dakota from 1872 to the
current
time. Additional displays interpreting American railroading in general will
also be
featured.
Phase One of the building's unique design includes an "indoor stall" in which
period
standard and narrow gauge equipment can be moved into the building from the BHC
yard
on a rotating basis for display and educational purposes. Other interactive
displays and
activities for all ages are also planned.
Among the items already donated by individuals and companies include a former
Chicago,
Rock Island and Pacific (later owned by the Chicago and North Western Railroad)
caboose;
corporate promotion items; historic railroad blueprints, memorabilia and maps;
employee
uniforms and rosters; photographic collections; and vintage items representing
many of
the railroads that have served the state. Additional items have also been
committed for
donation by private collections and organizations from around South Dakota.
These features along with the proximity of the 1880 TRAIN and Hill City's Main
Street will
combine to make a remarkable year-round venue for railroad enthusiasts, history
buffs,
and the general public. "You can't tell the South Dakota story without the
railroads. The
invaluable contributions, good and sometimes bad, of the railroads and their
employees to
the development of the state are immense, so this sort of recognition and
education
regarding those contributions is deserved and overdue. We want to make sure
this story is
told," said Rick Mills, the Museum board's president.
