In my early days on the Rock Island 1960-1961 there were some Checkers running
around at some of the major terminals..Probably assigned to the Terminal Supt.?
They were quite "roomy" and ideal for hauling crews...this is before the days
of the van.

I had an experience once in Oklahoma after driving a crew from El Reno to Enid
in the dark of the night in somone's Checker and on the way back I fell
asleep...I, fortunately woke up when I hit the shoulder and got back ont the
highway, but it was a terrifying experience which I haven't had since.

Anytime I see or think of a Checker I relive that experience...While they were
quite roomy they were less than comfortable to ride in...Kind of like the
proverbial...lumber wagon.

Pete

When I first started working for AMTRAK('76) one of the BN employees at
Minneapolis GN depot had a black Checker auto(huge taxi type) with a Q hearld
on the front door. Did not photo it, thought it would be there later. After a
short time he started driving something else. Don't know whatever happened to
it. AMTRAK and BN employees did not talk to each other much except for work
related items so I never asked. I think the car was his personal car that he
bought from BN when they did not need it. It was maybe used to haul crews
around, that function was out-sourced at some locations.
