Russ,
Dave Lambert again:
As I understand your post, you don't see how actual operation of the BREX
refrigerator fleet was affected by the Q's affiliation (through BREX) with
the Associated Companies. Am I correct, so far?
If so, following are some random thoughts on how operation of the BREX fleet
was affected:
* The reason that BREX thought it was a good idea to be affiliated
with WFEX and FGEX was greater flexibility and utilization of the fleet
during times it would be otherwise idle. The BREX cars were routinely used
to haul fruits and vegetables out of Florida in the winter, supplementing
the FGEX and WFEX cars in that service. Were it not for its membership in
the Sisters, BREX management would find itself with a lot of capital rusting
to the track during the winter months.
* BREX cars were used in PRR M&E trains during the Christmas
holidays to haul bulk mail. I have several PRR train sheets which clearly
show such trains to and from Washington with WFEX, FGEX and BREX cars in the
consist. Such trains often ran to 60 or more cars and ran as fast as freight
cars (with their slower-action brakes, axles, etc.) were allowed to run on
the NE Corridor. Some such trains were run right up to the early days of
Penn Central.
* FGEX put considerable pressure on its fellow sisters to build cars
and equip them with such things as stage icing grates, mechanical (and
later, electrical) air-circulating fans, minimum insulation thickness, etc.,
etc. The reason Washington-based management did this was to maintain the
ratio of cars committed to the pool. At one time (shortly after WWII), the
number of FGEX and BREX cars was way out of proportion to their apportioned
commitment. The letters from the President of FGEX to his counterpart at
WFEX are very much to the point about this. They make interesting reading,
to say the least.
* As indicated in the other posts in this thread, Q membership in
the Associated Companies directly affected the number and ownership of
foreign freight refrigerator cars that appeared on the railroad. One could
argue that this affected the operations on the railroad in terms of off-line
revenue (per diem) enhancement, etc, etc.
Regards,
DGL

Ken,
I find this somewhat interested but do not see anything that is
put done as actual Operations. What someone in management at
Washington might think all kinds of ideas but I do not know where
there would be involved as to actual Operation. Let's stick with the
CB&Q GST. That was the person that would have made thing actually
happen.
As to UP -omaha traffic here there was none, at least beyond the
1955 general area. I think you are looking for Council Bluffs. I'm
sure that any UP/CB&Q traffic can cover that issue. Since the UP
made more money to move it via the Council Bluffs it would be the
only policy. For many years coal traffic goes to CN via Sioux City.
Why? Money, nothing else.
While agree that there is plenty or historically printed information
on the other hand often is not connected with actual Operations.
Within the last year or so the CB&Q Organization sent out a great
deal of actual information that covered with Operations. I see that
I have seen nothing on any information added. Has anyone read that?

Back in Feb. there was a link posted to a pdf on wood reefers of the
FGEX/BREX/WFEX it also gives a brief history of the associated companies.
