Any idea where I can get this question answered? This has been something that
has bugged me my whole life, particularly after I was indoctrinated to the
concept that form follows function. I would really like to know the answer to
my question rather than have to speculate about it.

Again, two things bother me about the idea that these were merely vents.

  1. The obvious set of vents below them. In pictures in the archives of the
Denver Public Library, the demo train shows uncovered vents below and in close
proximity to these structures
http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?00004863+OP-4863. Later pictures, when
the consist was running as the Texas Zephyr, show the vents covered
http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?00007203+OP-7203.

  2. The openings of these structures face to the rear.

Of note is that the inverted bowls are open to the rear. Could they
have been an exit vent to force airflow through the cars? If so, it probably
did not work as well as intended because it was not even duplicated on the
final sleepers added to the DZ consist, let alone other railroad cars.

There were also vents below.

At the time the trains were retired, I believe the "bowls" were still there.

SJL,

Those 'inverted bowls' are covering the vents, later left exposed. I suppose
that at the
time of their construction, CB&Q and EGB believed that was needed. (possibly to
keep
snow out of the cars?)

Denver and Twin Cities Zephyrs? I first noticed them when I was a toddler
boarding the
DZ in Chicago in the early 50's and have wondered about them ever since for
more than
50 years. They were not on the all room sleepers added to the DZ in 1939.
