Seems like I recall either a personal "recollection" or a story in maybe TRAINS
by Bill Greenwood, former BN executive about working Mendota Tower and the
importance of expediting No. 77 AKA the Galloping Ghost with the legendary Red
Grange's number.

Pete,
It was, indeed, opened to traffic in 1949, 100 years after the
beginning of the Q. . Train #77 was the premier service and Red
Grange, #77, the "galloping Ghost" of University of Illinois football
fame (later the Bears and earlier, Wheaton High School) participated
in the ceremonies. There is a well know publicity photo of him poised
on the front corner of a "F" unit about to crack a bottle of
Champagne over the nose anti-climber. At that time, Train #77 was
supposedly also called the Galloping Ghost.
