It was, indeed, opened to traffic in 1949, 100 years after the
beginning of the Q. . Train #77 was the premier service and Red
Grange, #77, the "galloping Ghost" of University of Illinois football
fame (later the Bears and earlier, Wheaton High School) participated
in the ceremonies. There is a well know publicity photo of him poised
on the front corner of a "F" unit about to crack a bottle of
Champagne over the nose anti-climber. At that time, Train #77 was
supposedly also called the Galloping Ghost.
