The neat part about the Burlington Bridge is the channel takes a dog leg thru
the bridge. So larger tows often need a helper tug to get thru. Course then
you get the skipper who knows everything and the tow gets stuck or turned
sideways. During high water a barge can get away and get stuck under the
bridge. Then you get the sunday sailers with sail boats wanting to get thru.
Some will get so mad they lower the sail and go under.
Both La Salle(gone) and Ottawa had to be rebuilt during the Illinois River
Waterway Project in the '30's. That is when they became Lift Bridges
Beardstown (also on the Illinois River) was rebuilt in 1970 from a swing to a
lift span.
When the CTC was moved from Burlington to the Dispatcher office in Galesburg
the old machine was moved to Galesburg. So the DS had the locks.
The Beardstown Lift was operated by the Op at Beardstown. In an effort to get
rid of that job with the computerization of the Beardstown CTC the DS also got
the bridge. Due to delays to Tows at the bridge the bridge controls were moved
back to the clerk at Beardstown.

If my memory is correct the Burlington,IA bridge controls are in the bridge
tenders building in the center of the bridge on the lift portion. Ottawa and
La Salle,IL were similarly arranged.
Stopping for the hand proceed signal from the bridge tender at Ottawa was a
thrill in either direction due to S. Ottawa Hill.
