The old Fox River Branch is indeed immediately adjacent to Hydraulic St for
a few blocks in downtown Yorkville,IL.
Probably the most storied incidents I recall seeing or hearing are:
1) the old early BN 11811/11812 incidents when sand hoppers decided to leave
the rails in this stretch and on one occasion an auto parts box full of
windshields from Libby Owens Ford ended in the medical clinic building.
2) Another true story(passed down from RIP) One night #85 is headed west and
comes around the big curve at the east end of Yorkville and there's a fire
in the old ice house buildings along the North side of Hydraulic. The
Kendall/Bristol fire dept has used the FS parking lot as a staging area and
draped
numerous fire hoses across the house track and the mainline to fight the
inferno. As we all know trains dont stop on a dime and the fire dept quickly
has
much shorter hoses and no water pressure with which to fight their battle !
