I swear this is true. If I've told this one before I apologize upfront. The
previous email/newspaper story about Marshall Aull brought this one back from
the depths.
One night we're headed east on something that has a relatively good
HP/trailing tonnage ratio in the middle of the night so we're going along just
fine.
Speeding down thru the lower cut at Oregon (just below the sand plant) the
head light is bouncing of the rock walls as make the turn and all is well.
Suddenly there's this loud crashing of glass,a heavy thunk and the flap behind
the engine number comes flying open. What the ?!!!!!!!
After both the hogger and I raise our ducked heads to look around we find
the flap behind the firemans side
number board open and the fine below freezing night air rushing into the
cab. So I pry myself off the seat and find to my amazement a male pheasant
planted in the space where the number board lights just a few moments before
shined. Seems he was picking at the ballast or spilled grain on the R-O-W as we
came roaring thru and he was a bit slow to make his exist. I tucked the
unspoiled, brken necked bird into the # board compartment and closed the flap.
Since I knew Marshall made trips to the Dakotas to hunt birds I picked up
the radio and asked him to come to the Roundhouse at Cicero when we arrived
rather than heading directly home. I assured him it would be worth his time.
While I didn't tell him exactly why he dutifully came walking up to the pit as
we arrived.
I hid the bird behind me until I had climbed down from the unit and then
presented it to him as a prize.
He grinned from ear to ear and said "well I'll be xxxxxx". He took the
nicely chilled bird home and had pheasant for a meal w/o firing a shot.
These are the moments that you remember vs the daily grind.
