As follow-up to Tom's narrative on NW-2 paint schemes, I have found photos
with more variations on the schemes outlined below.  The "simplified" scheme
(#6) usually had the Scotchlight reflector striping on the side sill, but
there is at least one with a solid white side sill and another solid black
side sill.  A recent eBay photo shows 9403B in Denver in the black and grey
scheme (#6), BUT with no side sill striping and no slogan on the hood
(similar to what the C&S units look like).  I also notice that the number
fonts on the cab sides varied with this scheme from unit to unit.  I have
found photos for almost half the NW-2 roster at the end of the Q era, and
almost half of those photos show NW-2s in this late scheme (#6).  Was Q in
the process of heavy overhaul of this fleet in the late 1960s?

Switchers ordered/delivered after 1958 or 1959 certainly limits the
units involved - 12 SW1200's 9281-9282 delivered between 06/65 and
08/65, and 12 SW1000's 9310-9321 delivered between 05/66 and 06/66
(funny, you usually don't think of the SW1200 as basically a
contemporary of the SW1000). The paint scheme on these units uses
BURLINGTON written out on the side (not the Everywhere West / Way of
the Zephyrs script), but the really interesting thing about the scheme
is that it used a yellow/red frame stripe and did NOT have the dashed
white Scotchlite frame reflector stripe that was being applied to most
switchers at repainting. These Scotchlight reflectors started showing
up as early as mid-1959 according to photographic evidence. If anyone
can explain why the last SW1200 and only SW1000 batches did not have
the dashed Scotchlight, please enlighten us!

As another point on paint schemes on the SW1200/SW1000 order, at least
one locomotive was repainted into the "Simplified" Burlington
black/grey/white switcher scheme. That unit was SW1000 9314. When less
than three years old it was burned up in the Gibson roundhouse fire in
Omaha on February 2, 1969. The unit was repaired and repainted into
the final pre-merger switcher scheme and released around June of 1969.
A very unique SW1000 indeed!

I have been trying to document which schemes the switchers were in and
when, using photo evidence. I have broken the switcher schemes into
six (6) distinct schemes:

1. Very early solid black - Only on the pre-war and war year delivered
locomotives such as the 30 Baldwin VO1000's, 6 EMC SW's, and 18 SW1's.
Can anyone confirm if the NW1's came in in solid black (I would think
so since they were delivered in 1937) or the Alco S2's (delivered in
1943/44)?

2. The "Everywhere West / Way of the Zephyrs" script black/grey
"Blackbird" scheme with the yellow/red frame stripes.

3. The "Everywhere West / Way of the Zephyrs" script black/grey
"Blackbird" scheme with dashed white Scotchlight reflectorized safety
striping.

4. The "BURLINGTON" block lettering black/grey "Blackbird" scheme with
the yellow/red frame stripes.

5. The "BURLINGTON" block lettering black/grey "Blackbird" scheme
with dashed white Scotchlight reflectorized safety striping.

6. The final "Simplified" black/grey/white scheme (white used for the
nose stripes) with BURLINGTON on the hood (identical to the Redbird
scheme but with black instead of Chinese Red).

If anyone has any other thoughts on paint scheme breakdown, please let
me know.
