On the CZ through Pullman service, from looking through an old Official
Guide, starting in Chicago WB in the CZ it took 7-8 days for a single Pullman
to
make the round trip, Chicago-Oakland, Oakland-NYC, NYC-Chicago. Since it was
a daily operation, there had to be off line Pullmans running in the CZ
consist. Mike Spoor in a number of his color Burlington Books from Morning
Sun, he
has shown a number of off line Pullmans running in the CZ consist.

One interesting fact, the Pullman Company sold space, not a particular car
such as Silver Rapids. Thus a passenger could be riding in the CZ through
Pullman, Silver Rapids in the consist, and not be aboard Silver Rapids. In the
BRHS Zephyr Mike Spoor used some train sheets I remember one was from the
American Royal Zephyr, and yes Silver Rapids was making a round trip
Chicago-KC,
then back into the CZ pool. Also the through Pullman when it would arrive or
depart Chicago alternated between the PRR and the NYC. Why this was done I
don't know, but when the CZ through Pullman was on the NYC, the through
Pullman
from the UP City of San Francisco was given to the PRR.

Aboard the CZ the only way a passenger would know for sure which Pullman
space he/she would be assigned would be if they asked for the Drawing Room in
the observation. I'm sure that if a passenger requested Pullman space for
example close to the observation Pullman would make an attempt to place the
passenger in space nearest the observation.

Just in Chicago the number of through Pullmans had to be an extremely
complex daily operation. Then ad in the "tour groups" which in some cases
filled
all the space in one or more Pullmans, it had to be an operation that boggles
the mind. And people today whine when their 737 is delayed 5 minutes!
