Welcome aboard Carl! In no particular order, here's what will enhance
your understanding and thus your modeling & railfanning of the CB&Q
aka Burlington Route. (Duncan already hit a few but I will repeat)
A- Get a copy of Richard Overton's "Burlington Route" which has been
done in both hard & soft bound (see eBay, various used book Internet
searches or the Spring meet) It is considered THE definitive
corporate history of any corporation by academics (he also did 3 other
Burlington books)
B - Attend the Spring Meet esp. since it's in the area you wish to
model; will be @ Oregon, IL Sat., Apr 12. Although details are not
out yet you can expect touring of the restored CB&Q depot, various
clinics on modeling, collecting and/or understanding aspects of CB&Q,
a large swap meet made up of both commercial dealers and just plain Q
fans and a banquet with program. Models are often on display BUT most
importantly you will make contacts with people who share your specific
interests (I too model & collect the LaCrosse Div aka CB&N)
C - Join BRHS (see our website) - gets you two different slick
publications: the award-winning 'Burlington Bulletins' which are
almost like books on a CB&Q topic in-depth and 'Zephyrs' which are a
collection of news items, modeling & product reviews, smaller history
pieces, collecibles, classified column to buy/sell/swap, a Q/A column,
data sheets, photos, etc. Your Dues are more than worth the value of
the publications plus the reduced rate you get for Meets, the
opportunity to vote for Directors (or become one), etc.
D - In the case of your modeling interest, get vol 2 of the CB&Q in
Color by Spoor from Morning sun (covers Chicago to Twin Cities)
See 'A' as to sources also Hobby Shops
E - Depending on era you like, acquire Bernard Corbin's 'Steam Locos
of the Burlington Route' OR 'Burlington in Transition' (diesels)
See 'A' as to sources. His books are the definitive technical books
on the Q. We also benefit from Spoor's & Al Holck's multi volume
color books on the Q, Bill Glicks trilogy on Q heavyweights and myriad
other books on any all things Burlington!
F - Buy a couple system public timetables & depending on how early you
will model either LaCross Div or Chicago & Aurora Div employee TT's.
G - Have fun! Whether running a tinplate Zephyr with Vistadomes
around a tree or constructing a meticulous layout; early steam or SD's
(black &/or red schemes), 36' wood stock cars or 86' autoboxes,
homebuilt wood waycars or steel wide-views, the Q has them all running
on rural branches or 120+ mph speedways; triple track in Chicago or 3'
in Iowa, Illinois, S. Dakota & Colorado. YOU can model just about any
interest you have & find a CB&Q prototype including their own truck &
bus lines, marine operations & steam excursions. (not to mention
jointly operated passenger trains with GN, NP, CRI&P, D&RGW, WP and
Alton RR's and the Burlingtons RR subsidiaries: C&S and FtW&D!)
Cheaper, Better & Quicker - this Burlington slogan fits modeling &
collecting too as there are SO many good books in print, models in
stock or easily found in used condition not to mention a LOT of
timetables, brochures, calendars (you get one of those too via BRHS
mbrship!), passes, china & menus, etc. See you @ Oregon! (you
definitely chose the best 'fallen flag' RR not to mention it's still
the 1st name of American's premier RR - BNSF!)
