The book Eric mentioned is a good source but a quick reply is they were
buit in 1941 and classed XA-15B and numbered 48500-48599. There were
still 56 in the 1969 equipment register, some may have been painted
chinese red by then. As far as I know they were not renumbered.
Regarding the note about loading, before they started shipping grain in
covered hoppers grain was shipped in boxcars. A barrier (grain door) was
built inside the door and the car filled to a specified depth with grain.
