The AFT came through Chicago at least twice IIRC.
I worked at the Illinois Bell Headquarters Building on Randolph Street in
downtown Chicago (a quick duck through the complex, across Washington Street
and through the parking garage to the alley entrance of All-Nations Hobby
Shop....very convenient for a quick coffee break!!!). IIRC the 4449 and the 1
were
exchanged on the C&NW Navy Pier line just north of the Merchandise Mart. I
don't recall if that was on the Westbound or Eastbound leg, or maybe both...
I do know for a fact that it came through Belmont on the CB&Q racetrack running
Easbound. The full consist of the train was behind the 4449...it wasn't running
light to meet the train in Chicago so it was on the Eastbound leg of the tour.
I don't have the date but could dig out the slides for an approximate
date....although I was never really swift on getting the slides processed so
that might not be much of a help. I am sure that somewheres there is a log of
the
travels of the train documented....
Charlie,
I thought the Freedom Train arrived in Chicago from the east behind the T1;
it left Chicago westbound behind 4449. IIRC, 4449 arrived from the west running
light and had a crossing encounter with a truck at a crossing (on the
racetrack?) on the way to the EMD plant. Feel free to drop me an email off list
if you prefer ... I am a HUGE fan of the American Freedom Train!
