One of the earliest examples I can recall is the U. P. runthroughs on the  
mainline. The U. P. w/c stayed on the eastbound train and ended up in Cicero  
laying around the w/c tracks before being headed back west. If I'm not  
mistaken 
at first the Q actually added a Q w/c behind the U. P. one as the  working 
caboose.
