Steve and Others,
One morning at North LaCrosse had a rail grinder piloted
by a welder that wanted to move from the yard lead to the
new main line. This does require that it would get by the
EBCS at Grand Crossing but only briefly. Yardmaster got
an "OK" from the SOO Dispatcher and told them to make the
move. Off goes the rail grinder but it does not come back
down the new main. Where did it go? They had run across
the diamonds and were sitting on the BN CTC East of
Grand Crossing and were not sure whether they could go
back West again. Since where they were sitting could not
be driven to the welding supervisor had to walk down there
to discuss what they were doing there and why they had not
made the move as planned. Doh!
Amtrak has priority over everything on every BNSF line.
It's as simple as that. If the trains are significantly
late it is almost always because of Amtrak equipment
failures. The 169 only runs about half the time but no
one cares enough to fix it.
True story from the Hi-Line:
#1008 is at Havre. Lead unit not loading. Diesel shop
people come over and can not solve problem. They get
authority from Wilmington to use a freight unit. BNSF
offers them a EMD SD60. Pilot has already been called
and the whole bit. Amtrak crew declines the SD60 because
it's not air conditioned. They sit and wait for another
train to get to Havre with a spare C44-9W. What could
have been a two hour delay was turned into 4' 30".
Now we are in the position that the Shelby crew can not
make Minot. They are going to get another pilot at
Glasgow but all he is supposed to do is run the engine.
The "Extra" crew that they have available had already
been used for some other issue. Minot to St Cloud crew
is not qualified West of Minot. No problem there as they
are already paying for a pilot. They cab them to Williston
and change crews there. Now there is no way that crew can
get even close to St Cloud so there will be another dog
catch. Is any of this the Railroad's fault?
And, by the way, what is this "Racetrack" stuff. If I
wanted to read magazines I would subscribe to them.
