Hello, Pete and Charlie and Everybody
Back in 1961-62 I did my active duty time at the Savanna Army Depot. I had a
good friend there who was working a civilian job. He was a railfan and an avid
movie maker. He mounted his movie camera on a short plank and rigged up fish
line to pull on the trigger. We were awaiting the 5632 on a northbound
fantrip. He set the camera between the rails, positioned it carefully, pulled
the fishline under the rail, and moved a safe distance to the side.
The movies are impressive - the 4-8-4 looms ever larger, then roars directly
over the viewer. One car after another passes overhead with flashes of
sunlight. Then.....we see a flutter of white. Then, very briefly, a brown
blob. Then the screen goes dark.
Like I say, the movies are impressive. The clean-up job was less exciting.
