What happened to the NE-11 waycars? Or, more accurately, what didn't happen?
Why wasn't the NE-11 class designation used?
The NE-10's (13500-13524) were built in 1930 at Aurora - the CB&Q's first group
of waycars built with steel sides. (Incidentally, they were originally intended
to be numbered 13714-13738, following on from the previous group. Possibly to
differentiate these from the wood-sided cars, a new number sequence (13500- )
was started and used for all subsequent waycars. They were also the last group
built at Aurora)
The NE-12's with the sloping cupola (13525-13559) were built at Havelock in
1954, so what happened between 1930 and 1954 to cause a class number to be
omitted? Was it to emphasis the modernity of the NE-12's? Was it intended to
build another group but this didn't eventuate? Was the NE-11 label going to be
allocated to the "widow maker" box car conversions in 1943/45 or was it to be
used for C&S or FW&D waycars (like the GM-4E, GM-7 & GM-8)?
Other class designation gaps, such as GS-4 and XM-1, can be rationalised. Any
suggestions for this gap?
