IRRC the slag ballast had a little rust color in it due to residulals of iron
in it. The color varied quite a bit from stone to stone as well.... a single
color won't do for it. Dave Lotz sells (sold) some custom mixed ballast for HO
and N that looked reasonable as a starting point.
BTW, did you know that the CB&Q had a isolated company, the Burlington, South
Chicago Terminal Railroad that had 9.199 miles of track in a yard between 101st
and 105th Streets near the mouth of the Calumet River in South Chicago? It
gramted trackage rights to the EJ&E, BRC, and RI and connected to the C&WI.
I believe its purpose was specifically to obtain slag for ballast but I could
be wrong. It was incorporated on February 9, 1917 which is fairly late in the
scheme of things but which might correspond with a conversion to the slag
ballast. I don't recall if it was Joe Douda or someone else that said the Q
used to keep a couple of 2-10-2s down there although there were no engine
facilities or buildings at that location.
