I often refer to the ICC accident reports as those of you "usual suspects"
know.
There is a report...I think it's 1930's or maybe earlier of a silk train
running as a B&O "passenger Extra" over the Rock Island (trackage rights)
between 91st St. (can't think of the junction name) and the B&O at South
Chicago
rear ending a Rock Island Transfer somewhere between Gresham Jct and South
Chicago.
The engineer, who obviously didn't know his rules, was under the impression
that since he was a "passenger extra" and a Silk Train running on a schedule
(established by train order which was a common practice) that he was a first
class train and was not bound by Rule 93. It was a pretty serious affair.
I'll try to find the year, but it was later than we normally think of as the
period when the silk trains were running.
Stay tuned for further details.
Pete
