Pete,
I'll offer a guess as to how a TM could tell that a glowing letter of
reference really wasn't what it appeared to be; by looking for a symbol of some
sort
tucked into the signature or elsewhere on the letter. Much like the hobos had
signs to tell each other about the characteristics of towns and houses,etc.
The BRT records start about 1908-1910 and since they are BRT records there's
no reference to boomers in them. But there are references to scabs and to an
occasional member who decided to no longer pay dues but continue to receive the
benefits of union scale pay. They're not very complimentary.
