Generally the term "head in" in RRing refers to taking the siding on single
trk mainline territory and into a trk in a yrd complex. What follows is a true
CB&Q story as I heard it from at least one person (Bones Mathers) who was
there.
One day Walter Gunderson is strectched out on the bunk of a Q wooden w/c
meandering down the Aurora lead with a string of cars from Eola. The story
teller
didn't advise if it was the Alley Job,Frt. House job or the Aurora engine as
these were the jobs that would be going down the lead with cars to Aurora.
Now if you've studied old coal car history(BB#35) or are current in your
recent environmental events you know Southern ILL. coal is high in sulfur
content
and corrosive to carbon steel. You also know the Q used this coal in its'
locomotives and maybe you didn't know, but it was also used in the w/c stoves.
If you're familiar with this part of the Q you know the Aurora lead runs
downhill from Eola into the Hill Yd. at Aurora. This day as the hogger pinches
them up with the independent to enter the yard trks at the Hill Yard the slack
runs in and Walter slides down the bunk he is stretched out on. He slides head
first up against and into the stove ! As I heard the story his head ended up
inside the stove.
