I thought this might be of interest to some of you on the list. Can
anyone provide historical information on this car? It appears that the
last coat of paint the car received was M of W orange. Please respond
to "all" so Jim Mayer will receive your comments.

Thanks, Don

Subject: A CB&Q Heavyweight Pullman

You may remember that I contacted you recently with information on an
existing Burlington Pullman car that apparently is not yet on your roster
of Passenger Equipment. Here is the latest information I received today
from my son Christopher who lives in Bozeman and who is also familiar
with railroad equipment.

-It is CB&Q 250259. It was in MOW service before retirement.
-The date on the trucks is June 14, 1914 but we could not get an exact
builders date.
-Apparently there is now new fire damage, the roof is caving in, and a
number of windows are now broken out. We are afraid the car is past the
point of trying to salvage or preserve, and it may not be in existence
for much longer.

With the number we provided, can you determine any history on the car?
If you are willing to share, we would be very interested in what you
learn.

We hope this helps,

Jim Mayer

> Dear Don:
>
> You may not be aware of this but there is a former CB&Q heavyweight
Pullman located in Bozeman, MT. It may be of interested to your
organization. It probably is a 1920 vintage Pullman-built heavyweight
passenger car, however it may be a bit earlier vintage. I believe it may
have a wooden frame. I understand this would make it more rare than most
heavyweight Pullmans.
>
> I have previously spoken with the owner a few times. The owner is
interested in donating the car to a museum operation or similar and
receiving the tax benefits. There are a few problems; 1) The car is no
longer near a right-of-way but is about 1-2 miles from the nearest one.
2) The car does have some FIRE damage but appears primarily to be intact.
>
> Do you have a possible interest in the car? It can be moved by truck
to the rearest BNSF railhead as there a good roads in the area. It is
also just a few miles from the nearest interstate highway.
>
> I never had a chance to inspect the fire damage myself but can arrange
to have that done until I am in the area again. The fire was caused by a
resident living in the car and is confimed to one small area of the car.
>
> I believe the car was last in MOW service before retirement.
> I am not a member of your organization, but I am a former board member
of a western railroad museum. I mention that fact just so you have an
idea that I have some familiarity with rail equipment. My only interest
in the car is to see if it possibly can be preserved. If the owner
cannot donate the car, she will likely sell it for use with a store,
restaurant, etc.
