SJH,

Appreciate the information, next project was to be Aurora/Eola, love to do
Galesburg but I'd need 2 more basements to model all that I want to include (I
may anyway or have to go to a second level).

  Thanks,

  John

I have it on good authority the freight traffic thru Cicero is heavier then it
use to be but most are run thru Cicero and switched at Eola, N Lax or Galesburg
and Northtown.

Bill,

I model in N scale and know that I'll have to really compress and not model
yards or Union Station in their entirety but do want to capture the likeness of
the prototype as much as I can. I plan to have about 10 feet between the
Station and Clyde. Have about 14 feet for the yard and 10-12 feet for the
station and know I could devote the entire layout to either.

As modeling a hump presents problems, it will be "humpless". Do you know where
the Clyde freight traffic went after it was rebuilt into an intermodal terminal?

Thanks you for your helpful information,

John

John,

I hope you have a lot of space or are modeling in "Z" scale! Even
fore shortened, it would be a long way from Union Station to Clyde
Yard. I can answer a couple of your questions. Passenger trains were
turned by wyeing them at the 16th Street curve where the Q meets the
Pennsy. The wye is imbedded into that junction which is about one and
a half miles south of the depot entrance. The eastbound Amtrak
Southwest Chief, Train #4, still wyes there everyday prior to arrival
at Union Station. ( The train equipment departs as the eastbound
Capitol Limited later in the evening and heads south out of the depot
before turning east.)

As for the intermodal terminal at Clyde during Q days, it was located
on the northwest side of Clyde Yard just east of freight house #9. I
don't know where you might find a track layout for Clyde, but I have
seen them. Of course, you will have to decide whether you are
modeling it before or after the hump was installed in the mid '50s.
Prior to then, it was a flat yard. Subsequently, (in BN days) the
hump has been torn out and the entire area has been rebuilt into a
much larger intermodal terminal.

Rupert Gamlen's suggestion about getting a copy of Ed DeRouin's Union
Station book is a good one. It includes a track layout dating from
1925 and also shows a diagram of the wye at 16th Street curve, as
well as other information.
